Myanmar (Burma) is situated in Southeast Asia, west of Thailand and Laos. In the north lies Yunnan province of China and in the west, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur of India and Bangladesh. In the south are the gulf of Martaban and Bay of Bangal of the Indian Ocean where 1200 miles long coast line of Myanmar is formed.

The southern extension of the eastern Himalayan forms the western mountain range of Myanmar ( Naga, Chin and Arakan mountains) starting from the north and ending in the delta of the major river, Irrawaddy.

In the north lies the Eastern Himalayas where the highest mountain of Southeast Asia Hkakarborazi is located. Its height is ( 19296 ft) approximately the height of Mt Mckinley, about a thousand feet lower. Here also lies the transitional zone between Indochina and the Himalayan region.

The eastern part of the country there is a high plateau call the Shan Plateau which is continuous with the northern mountains of Thailand.

The southernmost portion is called Tenesserim ( Tanintharyi) and is situated in the Malayan Peninsular where transitional zone between the Greater Sunda and Indochina region lies.
